Department of Microbiology
Established in 2020, the Department of Microbiology at P. R. Thakur Govt. College offers a vibrant and future-ready academic environment. We currently offer a B.Sc. Honours programme in Microbiology—a full-time, 3-year undergraduate course under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) and 4- year undergraduate course under National Education Policy (NEP), 2020 as prescribed by West Bengal State University.
This programme provides an in-depth study of microorganisms and their vast applications in diverse fields such as medicine, agriculture, biotechnology, and environmental science. It integrates theoretical knowledge with hands-on laboratory training, equipping students with the skills and critical thinking necessary for both advanced studies and real-world challenges.
Our mission:
1. Construct a centre of Academic Excellence in the field of education and research in Microbiology.
2. Provide a complete academic upbringing for the overall development of personality for a successful career in Microbiology.
3. Provide an environment that fosters continuous improvement and innovation in the subject.
4. Teach our students proper skills to orient towards self-development as well as civic responsibilities.
Since its inception, the department has been steadily growing. The department’s journey began under the guidance of Ms. Sonali Saha, the first faculty member, whose dedication laid the foundation for its academic vision. Since then, the department has grown steadily, and currently, two dedicated permanent teaching faculty members and enthusiastic students are enrolled in the department. Despite initial challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the department continues to advance, with the development of a modern microbiology laboratory actively in progress.
