Department of Sociology

Raising the question of “where to locate the social” in the first sociology lectures is undoubtedly a tired cliché. However, there are no easy ways to avoid it. On the contrary, this question can lead to a plethora of unexpected journeys and enigmatic experiences. P.R. Thakur Govt. College’s Department of Sociology aspires to be a constantly moving institution in search of such mystical journeys. We invite young minds to join us in celebrating these sociological learning experiences. We’re looking for complex ways to understand, critique, and analyse every aspect of the world we live in. These efforts, we believe, can never be undertaken without the involvement of passionate, sensitive, and critical individuals.

At the undergraduate level, we welcome students from a variety of academic disciplines, including the sciences and humanities. The curriculum taught at this level is designed in this manner, allowing for various types of engagement with the social reality around us. It carefully weaves together sociological ways of looking at everyday life, theoretical abstractions of various kinds, and a critical analysis of the past and present of society in India.

For us, pedagogy does not imply training the untrained, baptising the uninitiated, or directing the ignorant toward knowledge. Learning is a way of life, as we understand it in the department. It is a dynamic, critically charged, philosophically conscious way of being that allows us to see ourselves in a new light. Our classrooms are only temporary gathering places from which we venture out into the streets, lanes, fields, laboratories, pilgrimages, mountains, forests, factories, markets, museums, and a variety of other spaces to learn amidst the people, imaginations, and dwellings that inhabit them. We welcome any and all who wish to join us on this journey.
