Department of Philosophy
“Be a free thinker and don’t accept everything you here as truth. Be critical and evaluate what you believe in.” –Aristotle
Philosophy means Love of Wisdom. It is the study of knowledge and ‘thinking about thinking’. It teaches critical thinking and logical analysis which helps us to understand the world. The students who are studying philosophy as a subject can learn how to live with a critical eye.
About the Department:
The Department of Philosophy was established in 2013 under the West Bengal State University when Philosophy as a subject was introduced in the General classes. Philosophy as an Honours subject began its journey in 2015. There are four full-time teachers in the department at present to fulfil the academic interest of the students. All of them guide their students towards developing their inner talent in various fields by involving them in debates, seminars and discussions in class. Students are encouraged to participate in extension activities like NSS, Sports, Cultural activities etc. The students as well as teachers lend books from the college library which has a collection of approximate 1000 books. Moreover, they have access to departmental library and Book Bank. The department has been successfully organizing ICPR sponsored Periodic Lecture series since the last three years and conducting Special Invited Lectures and Webinars. Students’ seminars (both offline and online) are also arranged for the benefits of the students. The faculty members keep themselves occupied with research activities. They contribute articles in reputed journals in addition to publication of books. They are also involved in editing books. Teachers of this department take part in faculty improvement programmes like Orientation Programmes, Refresher Courses, Short Term Courses, Workshops from time to time to enrich themselves. They also join several National, International or State Level Seminars organized by different Universities and Colleges. During the pandemic as well, the department strived hard for the betterment of students and college at large.
The department wishes that many potential students associate themselves with the department in the new academic year. The department hopes that the department improves and flourishes with the mutual co-operation of the students and teachers.
