Department of Computer Science

“Computer science is not about machines, in the same way that astronomy is not about telescopes. Computer science is about ideas.” – Donald Knuth.

About the department-

Established in 2015, just two years after the inception of the college, under the affiliation of West Bengal State University, the Department of Computer Science has steadily evolved into a vital academic unit within the institution. Initially founded as a Science Department, it has grown both in scope and infrastructure to meet the increasing interest and enrollment in the field. The current intake capacity for the Honours programme stands at 28 students per academic year. The department maintains a moderate student-teacher ratio over the years.

Courses Offered-

  • B.Sc. Honours in Computer Science (under CBCS system)
  • B.Sc. Major in Computer Science (under NEP system)

Infrastructure-

To keep pace with academic and industry standards, the department has developed a robust infrastructure aligned with the West Bengal State University curriculum.

  • It houses one fully air-conditioned Software laboratory with sufficient number of high performance desktop (Core i5) and one Hardware laboratory, well-equipped to facilitate practical learning and hands-on experience to support both CBCS and NEP curriculum.
  • Furthermore, students have access to a rich collection of relevant academic resources through the central library as well as a small departmental library, which is stocked with an adequate number of books to support their coursework.

In response to the dynamic and fast-growing Information Technology sector, which continues to offer some of the most lucrative career opportunities, the department places special emphasis on imparting both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in Computer Science. The faculty members are deeply committed to the holistic development of each student. They consistently provide individual guidance, recognizing and nurturing students according to their unique strengths and areas for improvement. This personalized approach helps build confidence, competence, and a strong academic foundation.

Over the years, the department has produced many promising students who are now serving with distinction across a wide range of professional and academic fields. From software engineering roles in leading IT firms and government organizations to research, teaching, and prestigious civil services — our alumni have consistently demonstrated their commitment in their respective domains.

Upon successful completion of the undergraduate program, students are well-prepared to pursue a range of promising career and academic paths, including:

  • Postgraduate studies such as M.Sc. in Computer Science or MCA (Master of Computer Application)
  • Employment as Software Engineers in IT companies and Government organizations
  • Doctoral research (Ph.D.) following Post graduation.
  • Careers in academia, including teaching roles in schools, colleges and universities.
  • Government Services such as civil services, and other administrative roles etc.

The Department of Computer Science remains committed to fostering a learning environment that encourages innovation, critical thinking, and professional growth, preparing students to excel in both academic and industry landscapes.
